Top 5 Lists

Recommended Posts

I think a lot of people like lists. I know I like them as a quick way to get ideas. I thought maybe people would want to share their top 5 (or more) games list as a way to kind of extend the post about looking for new games to play. Hopefully there'll be some interest here, and if not, you'll have my list at least for what it's worth.

  1. Pandemic
  2. Terraforming Mars
  3. Zombicide: Black Plague
  4. Mysterium
  5. Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game

Patchwork is a great game. And...I recently learned that there's a pretty awesome solo variant on BGG for it.

Terraforming Mars quickly moved up my list. It feels wrong to say because Pandemic has been my #1 for a long time, but it's possible Terraforming could overtake it at some point.

RoboRally is a dyslexic's nightmare.

Been thinking about this post for days. How do decide out of so many games I that enjoy which are my top favorites?

  9. Above and Below = 23
  10. Sushi Go Party! = 20

There are so many good games but here are my favorites. I do have to admit though that my top 10 can switch around based on what mood I am in. But these 5 will always land somewhere in the top 10.

1) Terraforming Mars

2) Viticulture Essential Edition

3) Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 (have not played Season 2 yet)

4) Puerto Rico

5) Carcassonne

I recently picked up Viticulture, and it's quickly moving into my top games list.

Here's me.  We generally go for sprawling COOP dungeon crawls.  I'm omitting games that I've purchased but haven't played beyond a GenCon demo (Gloomhaven).

  1. Aggravation and Sequence (see note)
  2. Kingdom Death
  3. Shadows of Brimstone
  4. Zombicide: BP
  5. Super Dungeon Explore

Note:  Aggravation and Sequence are family favorites.  My great grandfather made two homemade Aggravation boards that my mom played on as a kid, and I likewise played when I was growing up. The boards resided at my grandparents' house until they passed away, and my mom ended up with one.  I copied his particular pattern and made a set of 6 that I passed out at Christmas a few years ago to my parents, brothers, and a close friend.  Sequence came later, but likewise has been popular at family events and family trips while drinking beer and eating chips.

I have to split this into two lists - one for my family (casual games), and one for my gaming group (hard-core strategy/euro gamers)

Family/Casual:

1.  Pandemic (pretty much all versions but we love Legacy especially)

2.  Settlers of Catan (Cities & Knights)

3.  Bohnanza (one of the few non-coop games my brother in law will play)

4.  Union Pacific

5.  Lost Cities  (my parents wore out like three sets of this game :D )

Gaming Group/Strategy (although this keeps changing constantly - these are among the most consistently popular at the moment):

1.  Feast for Odin

2.  History of the World

3.  Terraforming Mars

4.  Through the Ages

5.  Battlestar Galactica

I definitely hope I can get Kingdom Death: Monster into the list once I have at least the basic models put together.

Great list!

Mine:

1. Keyflower...easily #1.  Has an incredible auction mechanic where your workers are your currency in the game.  So if you really want to win a good tile to place in your village you have to give up more workers that you will need later to actually use the tiles. On top of that, the workers come in three different colors, essentially making three different currencies in one game. So if someone bids to buy a tile with red workers  then the only way an opponent can outbid is also with red workers which they may or may not have a good supply of. Extremely Cutthroat Euro game too, which I love!

2. Terraforming Mars

3. Nations

4. Robinson Crueso: Adventure on the Cursed Island (Pandemic who?)

5. This one is a really tough call but I'd probably go with Castles of Burgundy
