ZICAM!!!  Take it before you go, during the con, and for a few days after you come home!  Kids, they never listen...

Did all of the above. Got the plague anyway. 😷

Geography is problematic! I did just start getting to gaming conventions on this side of the country though. Already went to KublaCon and Pacificon for my first gaming ones. Planning on hitting up Protospiel in the Bay Area this weekend.

Hmmm, hadn't heard if that one. We will be in Lansing for the Michigan Grand Tournament (aka MiGT). Playing dropfleet commander.

... assuming I can shake this sinus infection. I'm half considering calling off the trip so I can sleeeeep.

Ugh sinus infections. I finally shook mine off.

CinCityCon turned out pretty good! I only went Friday afternoon and Saturday, but I won some Age of Sigmar Champions starter decks on Friday and the Dwarven Smithy tournament on Saturday. That, along with trading or selling a bunch of games that had been collecting dust on my shelf, made it a pretty exciting weekend.

I was able to play Obelisk (already available) and Quest for Gaia (coming to Kickstarter) from some local designers and had a great time.

Awesome!

MiGT was pretty fun, but was a long haul for us for what ended up being 5 or 6 hours of gaming.  I won "best painted" for Dropfleet Commander but didn't play as well.  I was middle of the pack after the first round, but ended up totally biffing the 2nd game.  Surprise for me was that it was 2 rounds instead of 3, so we were packing it in around 5 and had awards at 6 on Sunday. I was expecting to still be going at 9 or 10 that night.

@Konas - just wondering.  DMG had planned to go to PAXU last year, but cancelled last minute.  I know you had said earlier that you were considering dropping the larger conventions.

So I was wondering if DMG was going to try and be at PAXU this year?  I won't be there, but I'd definitely suggest to my DLG friends to try to meet up with you if you were going.

We are not going. They scheduled it at a terrible time of year for us. We are WAY too busy with straight up holiday retail. Lindsey was considering going to do some work on her games but I think she is holding off.

Understandable.  Like I said - I just wanted to make sure you got to meet Conri and Kassandra if you were going.

PAX-U was this weekend. Is a little weird not to be there, though we made most of the same drive LAST weekend for our trip to see friends near DC.

Adepticon registration went live today!  They do badge registration and classes/events in one go.  The system isn't bad, but when you register multiple people you have to build out their itinerary individually.  And, with the server crying due to load, it wasn't a fast process.  While we got everything we were after, it was stressful.  I really wish more people would adopt the Gencon method where you build out your wishlist in advance and just submit it for processing on the appointed day.

I'm actually punting the DFC event to be able to take a couple more classes and play Freeblades.  The DFC event was 8 1/2 hours - I don't think I'm up to that!

Reapercon hotel reservations went up yesterday.  They have a very advantageous room rate for the Embassy Suites where the convention is held.

I thought the hotel bookings opened TODAY (Saturday) instead of yesterday, so I logged in last night after work to find that the block of rooms sold out in an hour (!!!).  Last year it took several months to sell the block (and then they negotiated another).

An hour is a little crazy to say the least.  There's an overflow hotel but it's so much nicer to be on property.

There are still rooms available at the hotel (just not at the 'con rate) - I managed to get a room at the AAA rate and then used Hilton Honors points to offset the cost.  I almost got down to the 'con rate that way.

An hour is nothing.

Try getting rooms at Dragon*Con where the room blocks that are available sell out in about 5 minutes (or less).

I'm happy to have one of the 'legacy' rooms so I can just renew it each year without having to deal with the rush.

This seems to unfortunately be the norm now and days - I remember being able to get 'con rate' rooms at host hotels like a month before the con.  Now it seems like every convention sells out in an hour or less.  It's frustrating and definitely has impacted the number of conventions I attend.

I expect a rush at the bigger cons.  I mean, the Gencon Hotel Lottery is ... a Lottery.

Reaper is (was?) a 1300 person grassroots convention using the standard Hilton infrastructure for reservations (the same 'group code' that you'd use to get into your cousin's wedding).  Last year it sold out in weeks/months.  To compress that to an hour is a big shift.

I guess this means they've graduated to the big time - and I'm curious to see how much growth they experience at the actual show.

And that's what I mean.  A lot of cons seem to be growing larger/getting more popular.  Faster than they anticipate.

I attended MagFest one year, and got a room like a month or so after the block opened.  The next year they crashed the server and sold out in a couple of hours.

It just happened from one year to the next, not gradual.. just seemed to skyrocket.

It's a bit frustrating really.

And that's part of my issue with GenCon.

I'd really like to go some year.. but because of needing a cane to walk, I really would need to be in one of the connected hotels.  And unless I can get into VIG, I don't think that's too likely - and I'm not even sure it would be guaranteed as VIG.

For the cost difference between VIG and normal badge, you could Uber from a non-downtown hotel, get dropped at the main entrance AND have $$ left over to spend a ton on the show floor. :)

Actually, the same is true if you compared costs between staying in a connected hotel and staying 15 minutes out.  The Hotel Lottery is pretty expensive now.  (I would love to do it for 1 or 2 nights but they insist on a 4 night minimum stay).

FWIW, if you're willing to obsess over the Gencon housing portal in the months after the block sells out, you stand a decent chance of still getting a downtown--or maybe even connected--room.  That's what I did last year after both me and my friend got a crappy time for the lottery and missed out the first day--I checked the portal several times a week, sometimes multiple times a day, and a couple months out I was able to snag a 2Q downtown room.  Your chances go up if you only need one bed, as it's the two-bed rooms that are really in demand.  People change their plans for a number of reasons, and the new system means any cancellations have to go back into the block, rather than get traded between attendees.  Just something to keep in mind!

I know.. and that's my issue.  The premium to have a really good shot at the connected hotel is extreme (between VIG and the hotel itself).

And while I get what you're saying.. I'm afraid my health is such that I really can't deal with having to uber 10-15 minutes out.  That just isn't possible for me.

Interesting to know and thank for the input.  But still, what do I do if I don't manage it?  Then I'm left with a badge that I can't really use.

I don't think it's happening this year at all, but I'll keep this in mind going forward.

You can request a refund on your badge up until mid-June (check for the exact date once badges go on sale)--you pay a $10 "administration fee" but otherwise get a full refund (IMO, they include a modest penalty to account for all the people who jam the housing portal on registration day but then cancel when they don't get a downtown room--otherwise there's no risk to going on a fishing expedition).

Of course, if you're haunting the room portal looking for cancellations, you're going to want to stick around after the cancellation date because that's when people are most likely to drop their reservations.  ;)  But I think you still stand a decent chance before that date to snag something (again, especially if you just want a 1K room).

Again I thank you for your insight.  As I said, for other reasons, Gen Con isn't really an option for me this year.. but it's good to know about the refund policy for the future.
